Have you ever looked at a large crowd of people, and for some reason, your attention is drawn to a person in the crowd.

They might be wearing a bright coloured outfit. They stand out. The same is true for job seekers.

While I’m not suggesting that you need a colourful CV with pretty pictures, the content must stand out and not only capture the potential employer’s attention, but hold it too.

Finding a new job can be a challenging and frustrating experience; however you can make it easier for yourself when you use proactive strategies. The below tips are applicable for all job seekers, both new to the job market and those with many years’ experience.

Here are some of my best tips for finding a new job at any career level.

1. Be clear and know what you want. Reflect on your strengths and weaknesses and the type of work that you enjoy doing. What do you want in a job?

2. Research the organisations that you are targeting. This will help you to get a feel for the organisation’s culture, what you are likely to be paid and if they are the right fit for you.

3. Tailor your resume to each position. By doing this, the recruiter or hr manager will know straight away that you have the skills they are looking for. Remember that your CV is one of the most critical tools for when it comes to job searching.

4. Have an online career profile. By having a career profile like on LinkedIn, you are showcasing your experience, knowledge, and passion online where employers and recruiters search the web for potential employees. Maybe it’s time to get your LinkedIn profile professionally revamped?

5. Be organised. Have a system that works for you, with organising your job searching. Even just a simple spreadsheet to keep track of the positions that you have applied for.

6. Utilise your network of contacts. People you know may want to help you in finding a job or may know that a position is currently available at their workplace and could refer you to their HR manager.

7. Don’t just apply online. Limiting yourself to only online could make the process take longer. Contact companies directly via cold calling or recruiters to let them know you are looking for work, or even leave your resume in their letterbox.

8. Have daily job-related goals to reach. By having a daily goal to achieve, this will help you to stay focused and motivated with finding a job.

Frustrated You Didn’t Hear From Back From an Employer? You’re Not Alone.

The article makes a good point. Employers can receive anywhere up to a thousand applicants for a single position. So you can imagine how time-consuming it would be to provide personalised responses to each and every unsuccessful applicant.

What size font is best suited to a resume? By Matthew Coppola


So, you want to make sure that your resume can be easily read. What size font is best suited for a resume and cover letter?

My suggestion is size 10 font for the CV, and either size 10 or size 11 font for the cover letter.

Generally speaking, most job applications are viewed online, rather then printed out and read in paper form. The reason being is that a recruiter/employer may receive hundreds of applications. In the interests of saving paper/environmental sustainability and cost reduction (costs in paper and ink), they may opt to just view the application documents online.

Viewing documents on a computer screen allows you to expand and zoom in on the document, depending on the reader’s preference.

Is cold calling employers to find a potential work opportunity old fashioned and not worth doing? By Matthew Coppola


The short answer is no.

Many jobs are still not advertised online or in the paper.

Some jobs are filled internally by employees within a company being the first to know about a job opening within their department or another department in the company.

Some employers and hiring managers may be interested in hiring someone, but for several reasons, they may decide not to advertise. Their preference may be to head-hunt/search for potential candidates that match with the skills and experience they are specifically after, rather than advertise and have people applying who may not be suitable.

Picking up the phone and calling a prospective employer to briefly introduce yourself to find out if your skills and experience would be of benefit to their company and of course if there is a potential job availability, can be a great way to get your foot in the door and tap in to the hidden job market.

Job hunting means to be actively looking and applying for work. Scouring job vacancy websites and apps to find the right job or one that you are interested in doing. You like the employer and the job and feel that you are well suited to the position. More often than not however, many will send out job applications one after the other, with a standard covering letter, generalist resume and a couple sentences in the email saying that they are interested in the position and all about them. That’s right, all about them. 

Well it shouldn’t be all about the job seeker but rather all about the resume. You do not need to elaborate on everything you have done in your 20 year career. Rather, talk about the experience that relates to the job.

Many people send out job applications that are not tailored for the position and that actively addresses the employer’s interests. If you are a fire fighter but want to work in an accounts office, well then you wouldn’t send your firefighting resume and talk about how many fires you have eliminated when writing your job application. No, rather you would change your resume for office work and address the requirements for the position and how you feel your skills and experience would add value in that position and for the employer in meeting their business goals.
